Description: | POSITION OVERVIEW: Sublette County, Wyoming, is seeking a full-time Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Mitigation Coordinator to lead efforts in reducing wildfire risks, fostering community safety, improving community preparedness, promoting ecological health and enhancing the resilience of forests, rangelands, and watersheds. This role supports the implementation of the Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) and the Sublette County Healthy Forest Collaborative initiatives.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level. • Work with local, state, and federal partners to improve wildfire resilience on a landscape level through projects designed to improve forest health, reduce hazardous fuels, improve watershed sustainability, increase vegetation biodiversity, and enhance wildlife habitat. • Work with private property landowners to create fuel treatment prescriptions and implementation including boundary determination, access, unit layout, marking, cruising, volume appraisal, advertising, and contract preparation. • Support community engagement efforts, including Firewise initiatives and wildfire public education programs. • Assist the Sublette County Administrative team to secure and manage natural resource grant funding. • Supervise and mentor temporary/seasonal fire/fuels crew (grant dependent) to implement fuel treatment recommendations.
QUALIFICATIONS • Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in forestry or natural resource management. • Candidates must have at least 3 years of progressive work experience in forestry or silviculture. • Preference may be given to candidates with supervisory wildland fire experience and qualifications. • Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license; preference may be given to candidates who possess a valid Class B commercial driver’s license.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES RELATIVE TO THE POSITION: • Knowledge of forestry principles/practices, forest ecology, silvicultural treatments/methodology, timber management, harvesting systems, forest products industry, surveying, and timber cruising. • Knowledge of fire behavior and ecology, historic fire regimes, wildfire management. • Skilled in using computers and professional land management software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as proficiency in ArcGIS, GPS devices, and spatial data collection, display, and management. • Skilled in collaboration with diverse groups, addressing issues openly and professionally, fostering teamwork, and providing coaching or mentoring to others. • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms, with techniques to tailor messages to diverse audiences for clarity and impact. • Ability to plan, organize, and track work clearly and efficiently, ensuring tasks are completed on time to meet desired outcomes. • Ability to use sound methods to plan and track work, appointments, and commitments, evaluate progress on tasks, and adjust work as needed. • Ability to apply complex rules, evaluate varied information sources, and make well-reasoned decisions while explaining their rationale. • Ability to estimate resource needs, develop strategies, achieve goals, and complete projects. • Ability to perform year-round work in an outdoor environment in all weather conditions (telework is not available for this position).
Job Classification: Administrative, Full-time, Salaried, Non-Exempt, Grant-Funded (already secured through NGO)
Salary: Salary is $82,744.84 plus a generous benefit package that includes paid employee health/dental insurance, HSA contribution, life flight coverage, retirement, paid vacation, paid sick leave, paid holidays, life insurance, and disability insurance.
