Camping & Campgrounds

Sublette County is over 80% public land. The Bridger-Teton National Forest and Bureau of Land Management are the primary government agencies managing the bulk of the public land in the county. Both agencies have developed recreation campgrounds and dispersed areas offering virtually unlimited opportunities for camping and outdoor recreation.  Season of use is typically Memorial Day weekend to the end of September, depending on the location and elevation. The opening day depends greatlly on the weather (when snow leaves) and annual water quality testing results.

Developed campgrounds are typically located near a lake or a stream and have picnic tables, tent or RV spots, and nearby restrooms and trash recepticles. All but a few offer potable drinking water. Some campground units are reservable in advance through ReserveUSA, others are first-come, first-serve. Highest season of use is July and August and during national and local holidays. Special RV pull-through units are available in most developed campgrounds. None of the campgrounds have RV dump services, phones or showers. Cell phone reception may be spotty in ampground areas located near the mountains. Some campgrounds have handicapped accessible sites and restrooms, but not all. Corrals for stock are available at the major trailheads into the wilderness areas. Larger campgrounds have Campgrounds Hosts on location during the summer season.

Overnight campground rFees range from $5 to $15 per night, depending on the site. Campgrounds typically are the busiest during July and August, as well as during national and local holidays. Most developed campgrounds are accessible to RVs, but none have hookups. Access roads may be rough for long or low-clearance vehicles. If you are unfamiliar with the area you plan to visit, it is advisable to ask about the road conditions. Most area campgrounds are many miles from help should you experience a breakdown or flat tire along the way.

Dispersed Camping
For those who enjoyo 'roughing it', there are many areas for dispersed camping in the area along streams and near lakes. Many places already have fire rings and cleared areas for campfires. Campers are encouraged to use existing dispersed spots to have less of an impact on the landscape. Campfires are allowed in these locations as long as campfire restrictions are not in effect due to high fire danger. Campers are responsible for keeping their campfires under control at all times. Dispersed camping sites need to be located at least 200 feet from water and at least 100 feet off roads or trails. There are also limits to the number of days visitors can occupy a campsite, so check with the nearest Forest Service office to discuss your plans for extended stays. Dispersed camping site soperate on the "Pack it in, pack it out" system since trash services are not offered in those locations. Bring their own drinking water or use approved purification techniques before drinking any water from area streams or lakes. Consider all open bodies of surface water to be infected with the giardia micro-organism which can make you very ill if you drink the water without treating it first.

Bears
Both grizzly bears and black bears inhabit the mountains and forests in Sublette County. It is not unheard of to have a bear come into a developed campground, but it is not common. Green River Lakes and the Big Sandy campgrounds have bear proof storage containers or storage poles at some sites. It is important for campers to be "bear aware" and keep a clean camp at all times. The Upper Green River Lakes area is designated Grizzly Bear Habitat and food storage regulations are in effect. Food and garbage are required to be stored where it is impossible for a bear to reach, such as in a closed vehicle. Local Forest Service offices have pamphlets and information handouts on how to camp in bear country.

Pets
Pets must be kept under control at all times. It is the obligation of dog owners to keep their pet under control at all times to avoid injury to horses, riders, hikers and other forest visitors. Dog owners are asked to be considerate of others and not leave pet waste on trails or in campsites. The Pine Creek watershed and Fremont Lake are the source of Pinedale's drinking water and are designated as a municipal watershed. Additional restrictions apply for camping and dogs in the Pine Creek drainage.
