Description: | Infection Prevention & Control Specialist The Infection Prevention and Control Coordinator is responsible for the effective direction, management and operation of infection prevention and control for all Sublette County Hospital District branches (Hospital, Clinics, Skilled Nursing Facility and EMS). The Infection Prevention and Control Coordinator is responsible for promoting and assuring that high standards of clinical and infection prevention and control practices are maintained through development and/or review of policies and procedures, safety inspections, education of District personnel and consultation with local, state, and regional entities. The responsibilities encompass compliance with COLA, CMS, OSHA, and state regulations, outbreak investigation and ensuring employee compliance to standards.
Supervision Received: Reports directly to Director of Quality
Responsibilities: 1. Establishes, implements, and administers the District's Infection prevention and control goals, objectives, policies, and procedures following CMS regulations.
2. Responsible for developing and/or maintaining infection prevention and control policies and procedures that ensure consistent quality and safety while meeting regulatory standards based on local, state, and national certifying and governing bodies. Is an active member of the Policy/Procedure Review Committee.
3. Responsible for developing a system for identifying, investigating, reporting, and preventing the spread of infection and communicable diseases among patients and personnel, including contract staff and volunteers. Continually promotes a culture of antibiotic stewardship.
4. Performs monthly safety inspections with emphasis on infection prevention and control.
5. Responsible for the District Infection Prevention and Control plan including annual review, staff education, and ongoing collaboration with Providers, Directors of Clinical Departments, EMS, Skilled Nursing Facility Director, and Facilities Director to assure compliance with PPE (personal protective equipment) to include Respiratory FIT testing.
6. Identifies and reports any communicable diseases as required by the state and local health authorities in coordination with Laboratory Director. Performs weekly reporting to National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN).
7. Maintains District employee health records including TB, Hepatitis, etc. Is responsible for new employee immunization requirements and supports Wyoming Department of Health vaccination initiative for staff, Skilled Nursing residents and patients.
8. In-services all new employees and provides ongoing education regarding infection prevention and control techniques. Educates all employees on Policies and Procedures related to infection prevention and control and/or Patient Safety.
9. Is the primary resource person for infection prevention and control issues and interacts with providers, nurses, department directors, other staff members, contracted employees, and volunteers to provide resource information, resolve infection prevention and control problems, and identify opportunities to improve service and reduce costs.
10. Maintains District employee health records including TB, Hepatitis, etc. Is responsible for new employee immunization requirements. Responsible for the sharps program including education, identification and management of injury, maintenance of log and reporting of injury, if indicated.
11. Develops and maintains all department competency plans as it pertains to Infection prevention in collaboration with Director of Nursing, Director of Quality and Medical Directors.
12. Maintains an effective working relationship with Sublette County Department of Public Health.
13. Effectively and efficiently communicates new policies and procedures or changes to existing policies and procedures to all members of the SCHD.
14. Communicates the mission, ethics, and goals of the hospital. Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices. Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
15. Demonstrates responsibility for knowing and adhering to all District and departmental policies and procedures.
16. Understands the importance of patient confidentiality and HIPAA rules and regulations.
17. Other Duties as assigned
Qualifications: 1. BS Nursing or Medical Technologist preferred.
2. Infection Prevention and Control certification (CIC) preferred or must acquire within one (1) year.
3. Current State of Wyoming RN License without restrictions or current MT License without restrictions.
4. Minimum of three years professional nursing experience including two years of emergency nursing experience. Or minimum of three years professional Laboratory experience including experience with infection prevention and control procedures. Applicants with previous managerial or supervisory experience preferred.
5. Ability to work well with providers, employees, patients, and others. Ensures the privacy and confidentiality of patient and District information by abiding by and enforcing the HIPAA privacy policies.
Knowledge. Skills, and Abilities: 1. Knowledge of infection prevention and control principles including understanding of nosocomial infection definitions, functional understanding of sterilization, disinfections, and sanitation.
2. Exhibits basic understanding and use of microbiology and epidemiology principles, outbreak investigation techniques, OSHA Blood Borne Pathogen Standards and OSHA Tuberculosis Management.
3. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish/maintain a safe work environment for the medical staff and patients.
4. Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods, and techniques of professional clinical standards to provide ongoing patient care in both the ER and clinical setting.
5. Skill in identifying problems and recommending solutions.
6. Skill in preparing/maintaining records, writing reports and responding to correspondence.
7. Ability to maintain and evaluate quality control standards.
8. Ability to react calmly and effectively in managing emergency situations.
9. Ability to communicate dearly and effectively.
Working Conditions: 1. Subject to varying situations including ability to understand and respond appropriately, effectively, and sensitively to special population groups, including those defined by race, ethnicity, language, age, sex, sexual orientation, economic standing, etc.
2. Frequent contact with a variety of people Including prisoners and people with mental, emotional, and physical disabilities.
3. Medical office, exam room, laboratory, radiology, emergency room and professional practice settings. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases and other conditions common to rural clinic environments.
4. Work environment involves exposure to unusual elements, potentially dangerous materials, and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may Include the use of protective equipment.
5. May require travel between District sites.
Physical Demands: Varied activities including moving, reaching, bending, and lifting. Requires full range of body motion including handling, moving, positioning, and transporting patients. Also requires manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and moving for extensive periods of time. Occasionally moves items weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. This position frequently requires working under stressful conditions and irregular hours. Year-round highway travel between clinics and other facilities throughout the district is required.
