Is Fremont Lake Open?
by Dawn Svalberg
April 20, 2004
We've had some inquiries lately wondering if the ice is still on Fremont Lake and if the road to the middle campground is open yet. We drove it this evening to find out and here's the report.
The ice is completely off Fremont Lake. Amazing the difference one week has made! The road through the Forest Service campground is free of snow all the way to the end. We just ran into one small patch of snow in the lower end shady patch that even a small sedan would be able to get through just fine. All the pull through units are free of snow. The sidehills in the entire area snow free. We didn't drive the road into the summer homes, but from the junction with the main campground road we didn't see any snow at all.
The Forest Service won't turn on the water or rest room facilities for awhile yet at the campground, but people are welcome to come and camp there at no charge. There just aren't any services. The boat ramp is free of snow, but we don't want to make any recommendations about if it is really safe to launch a boat not knowing if there might be any ice just under the water surface that we didn't see in our evening run as daylight was fading.
So, yes, you can get into the Fremont Lake campground now and all the way through. Be sure to bring water and necessary supplies and a warm sleeping bag. Temperatures are still in the 40s and 50s along with the usual chilly wind off the lake. Also, there aren't any signs yet of green leaves on trees or shrubs, or green grass. But at least the road is clear and the snow is off. Next weekend we'll see how far we can get up Skyline Drive. Last weekend it was only free of snow a little past the turnoff past the ski area. If there are any specific areas you want to know about for snow conditions, let us know and we'll check it out and report back!
