Winter Snow Advisory through Thursday
December 29, 2004

The National Weather Service out of Riverton has issued a winter Snow Advisory for the lower elevations of western and central Wyoming through Thursday morning as a strong and moist Pacific storm moves into our area. The advisory includes the Salt, Wyoming and Wind River Mountain ranges and all of Teton County. Accumulations of 4-8 inches of snow is predicted for the valleys and from 8-16 inches in the mountains. The heaviest snow will fall on the southwest facing slopes of the mountains. Eastern Wyoming can see some strong winds associated with this storm through Thursday morning.

A black ice advisory was also in effect mid-day Wednesday for Big Piney, Daniel, Pinedale, Bondurant, Hoback Canyon, up to Jackson and through the Snake River Canyon to the Idaho border. Pinedale and Big Piney reported receiving several inches of new snow by Wednesday and snow continued to fall throughout the day. White Pine Ski Area reported 3 inches of new snow overnight by Wednesday morning-great news for skiers and snowboarders!

Bondurant could see up to 8 inches of new snow by Thursday with this first storm, and more in the days following. Snowfall may be heavy at times, with patches of fog, limiting visibility for anyone driving area roads. Travelers are advised to check road conditions before departing. Roads will become snow packed and slick, especially over mountain passes where strong gusty winds will cause areas of blowing and drifting snow.

2nd Storm Thursday and Friday
Another storm is expected to come into the area Thursday night and Friday bringing more significant snowfall, up to 6 inches more in the valleys and 12 inches in the mountains. Areas southeast of Big Piney, towards Fontenelle and the Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge, are expected to see lighter snowfall amounts.

3rd Snow Storm for New Year’s Weekend
Yet another storm is on the horizon for the weekend as an upper level low west of Wyoming combines with an arctic cold front east of the Continental Divide. This is expected to bring more snow and very cold temperatures late in the New Year’s weekend and early in the first week in January. This combination if cold temperatures and more snow could make travel hazardous over the New Year’s Eve weekend.

A Snow Advisory is issued when light snow is expected to develop, but only enough to cause minor inconveniences such as travel delays. No severe winter weather is expected at this time, according to the NWS.
