Hernan Maquieira, reported as hailing from Ushuaia, Argentina, and Ostermundigen, Switzerland, won the 8-day International Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog Race (IPSSSDR) in 20:31:54 on Saturday. Jacques Philip from Nenana, Alaska, was second with 20:44:45. Melanie Shirilla from Lincoln, Montana came in third with 21:06:36.
Hernan Maquieira, age 29, is an IPSSSDR rookie. He first came to Wyoming as a handler for Lloyd Gilberston in the 2003 IPSSSDR. He is currently employed by the Caribou Sled Dog School in Chatham, Michigan. In 1994, Hernan started working with sled dog tours at Altos Del Valle in Ushuaia, Argentina with his uncle Pedro "el Gato" Curuchet (2001 Iditarod musher). In 2002, Hernan moved to Europe to live in Switzerland.
Eighteen teams competed in the 2005 IPSSSDR—the largest sled dog race in the lower 48 states. With its unique “Stage Stop” racing format, the race stopped in a different community each night from January 28 through February 5, 2005, beginning in Jackson, then on to Lander, Pinedale, Alpine, Kemmerer/Diamondville, Evanston, and Lyman/Mountain View before arriving in Park City, Utah. Racers spent two of the days in the Pinedale area running 2 separate races for the Pinedale State Stop between January 31st and February 1st.
Pedigree® Food for Dogs is the title sponsor of the IPSSSDR. The Pedigree® brand actively supports a wide range of programs that promote responsible pet ownership and highlight the contributions dogs make to society.
