Halfway Post Office Project
Still seeking postmarks from old local post offices
March 11, 2005
Local historian Jonita Sommers is working on a project with the Green River Valley Museum researching the historic post offices in Sublette County. She is asking the public for help in finding postmarks from many of the small area post offices from old letters or postcards that people might have in their personal family collections.
The project is the Halfway Post Office Project and will ultimately be published in a book. The Half Way Post Office was located on the Ryegrass Road between North and South Cottonwood Creeks in the early 1900s.
If anyone has old correspondence with postmarks on a letter or postcard from any of the post offices listed below, she is hoping to get a good photocopy of the postmark. These can be mailed to her at Jonita Sommers, PO Box 266, Pinedale, WY 82941. The letters or postcards can also be taken to the Office Outlet stores in either Pinedale or Big Piney to have a copy made and then leave the copy at the store for her.
For more information, contact Jonita at 307-367-4756 or the Green River Valley Museum at 307-276-5343 and leave a message.
Jonita is looking for a photo of Electa Lloyd as well as postmarks for the following post offices: Abby, Alexander, Ball, Burns, Calpet, Cleo, Dry Piney, Eldorado, Elkhorn, Higgins, Leckie, Marbleton, Mason, Meadowbrook, Mondell, Pearl, Plateau, Richards, Stanley, Wells, Viola, Tulsa, Wyotah and Hale.
