Adopt-a-Highway Spring Clean Fling
May 4, 2005
The view from Wyoming's highways will improve in the coming weeks as hundreds of Adopt-A-Highway volunteers get out to clean their two-mile highway sections during the annual Spring Clean Fling. Now in its 16th year, Wyoming's Adopt-A-Highway program has about 1,000 participating groups statewide, and the members are encouraged to get out in May to make the first of their two required cleanups for the year.
During the 2004 Spring Clean Fling, dedicated volunteers around the state removed an estimated 52 tons of litter from along the state's highways. The volunteers providing this public service range from retired people to elementary school children. Their groups represent fraternal, civic and social clubs, youth groups, employee and professional organizations, churches, government agencies and families.
Signs identifying the groups are posted at each end of their adopted section, and WYDOT supplies safety brochures, orange vests, and trash bags to the volunteers for each cleanup. Anyone interested in adopting a highway in western Wyoming can contact David Fedrizzi, 307-352-3050 (Sweetwater, Uinta, Lincoln, Sublette, and western Teton counties).
