Injured man rescued from Square Top Mtn
Tip-Top Search & Rescue helps 2 injured on the mountain

On Wednesday, July 20, 2005, at 10:25 am, Mike Hanko, reported to Sublette County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) that his father had fallen while descending Square Top Mountain near Green River Lakes and had possible broken ribs and a dislocated shoulder. According to a news release by SCSO Sheriff Wayne "Bardy" Bardin, Mike’s father, Neal Hanko, was unable to walk and needed assistance to get to a medical facility.
Sublette County Tip-Top Search and Rescue High Angle Team was notified and transported to Hanko’s location by Forest Service helicopter. Neal Hanko was evacuated to the Pinedale airport, then taken to medical facilities in Idaho by Bannock Life Flight. Search and Rescue personnel returned to Square Top Mountain and retrieved Sharron Hanko, sister to Mike Hanko, and transported her to the Pinedale Medical Clinic for head injuries when received while trying to help her father. Ms. Hanko was treated and released.
Members of Tip-Top Search and Rescue were Tony Chambers, Darren and Amy Davidson, Dave Lankford, Milford Lockwood and Jason Ray. Sublette County Sheriff’s Office personnel were Sergeant Jason Streeter and Deputy Dave Siefkes.
Sublette County Sheriff Bardin praised everyone involved for their timely response and attention to detail in evacuating the Hankos, "Search and Rescue members train hard for accidents like this and should be commended for their dedication."
Tip Top Search and Rescue is a volunteer, non-profit organization based in Sublette County which has been in existence for more than 30 years. The men and women of this all-volunteer team train weekly. They are called out on an average of once or twice a month throughout the year to conduct a search. Their busiest times are fall and winter due to hunting and snowmobiling accidents and people caught in winter storms. Tip-Top Search and Rescue team members are extensively trained for high-angle rescues, lake rescues, swift water rescues, avalanche awareness and emergency survival.
