Man injured by a bear on Bridger-Teton Forest
In Teton Wilderness near Bridger Lake
September 12, 2005

The Bridger-Teton National Forest reported that a man was injured by a bear on Sunday, September 11 around 1:30 pm just north of Hawk’s Rest cabin. The incident occurred in the Teton Wilderness, near Bridger Lake on the Buffalo Ranger District.

The man incurred injuries to his left wrist, and right shoulder, and on his lower back and right bicep. Other members of his party treated him on scene. A helicopter was called to transport him out of the Wilderness to St. John’s Hospital in Jackson, Wyoming.

After the man was attacked, members of his party rode their horses to a nearby camp to find help. Buffalo Ranger District Trails Supervisor Rick Taylor arrived on scene and assisted with rendering first aid to the victim.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department was contacted immediately after the attack, and they will be continuing their investigation. The species of bear and the circumstances surrounding the attack are also under investigation.

Buffalo District Ranger Elizabeth Brann encouraged visitors to the Forest to be alert when recreating in bear country. “We are grateful that this gentleman was not in the Wilderness alone, and that we were able to get him the help he needed quickly,” she said. The Forest continues to remind all visitors to be sure to travel in a group when you are in bear country.

Further details will be released from the Forest as they become available and pending a complete investigation of the incident.
