Snow Spotter Training Sept. 21
New Wyoming Snow Spotter Network

The National Weather Service will be conducting a Snow Spotter Training class in Pinedale on Wednesday, September 21. The training session will take place at the Pinedale Public Library beginning at 6:00 p.m.
The one and a half hour class is free of charge and open to anyone with an interest in reporting precipitation and snow amounts year round. All course materials are provided to the volunteers.
Trained observers will be asked to provide precipitation, snowfall and hail reports in support of the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network, or CoCoRaHS. The NWS and other governmental agencies will utilize CoCoRaHS as a central location to obtain quality precipitation reports from trained volunteers.
"The observations we receive from this network enable us to better understand precipitation patterns across western and central Wyoming," said Warning Coordination Meteorologist Chris Jones of the NWS Riverton office.
"The CoCoRaHS network is a fun way to participate in meteorological science and to provide quality data to a wide variety of agencies and individuals," Jones said.
The network, which originated at the Colorado Climate Center at Colorado State University, has quickly spread to neighboring states and has been profiled on the Fox News Channel and in USA Today. The network of trained volunteers provides daily precipitation reports using the Internet. Some of the measurement tools are provided free of charge by CoCoRaHS, the USDA Farm Service Agency, and the NWS.
