Planning your Snowmobiling Trip
Season will get rolling in a couple of weeks
November 16, 2005
(Pinedale) Now that we’ve had our first good snowstorm, we just can’t help but start thinking about winter sports and playing in the snow!
The heart of the snowmobiling season here is typically from mid-December until April, so it still is early yet for the regular season. Avid snowmobilers can find powder for sledding up high in the Horse Creek area of the Wyoming Range. None of the trails in the Wyoming Range or along the Continental Divide Trail are being groomed yet, and that probably won’t start for a few more weeks until we get some more good storms through to build up the base.
It’s not too early to plan your upcoming snowmobiling trip. We strongly recommend making your lodging recommendations now for any trip you have planned to our area for the winter. Lodging is still tight due to oil and gas workers taking up a lot of rooms. If you have a group function planned, or will be here over the holidays, we recommend calling to reserve and secure your room as soon as possible. To receive a copy of free maps for area snowmobile trails, contact the Sublette County Chamber of Commerce-Sublette Visitor Center, director@sublettechamber.com, 1-888-285-7282. Check out the links at the end of this article to get to information about snowmobile rentals, lodging, travel info, and nearest airports and car rentals.
On a logistics note for picking trip dates on the calendar, snowmobilers who want to go sledding in the Upper Green along the Continental Divide Trail should be aware that there will be two big sled dog races using the trail in January. The Green River Rondy Sled Dog Race is scheduled for over New Years, December 31st and January 1st. The International Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog Race (IPSSSDR) Pinedale Stage Stop will be going on in the Upper Green January 29-31, 2006. These two events will utilize the Upper Green River road parking area that snowmobilers use. If you don’t mind competing with teams of sled dogs for a parking space, the sled dog races and snowmobilers can both use the area, but parking might be a bit interesting. For those who would prefer not to get entangled in all that, we recommend picking a different area to go snowmobiling on those two dates.
For those planning snowmobiling-skiing combo trips, the latest word we’ve heard from White Pine Ski Area is that things are looking great for a Thanksgiving Day opening this year. They are making snow and, if we get a couple more good storms between now and then, the major runs will be all set to open over Thanksgiving holiday.
We’ll post current information on snowmobiling conditions and trail updates throughout the season here on Pinedale Online, so keep checking back as we get further along in the winter season. If you have a question about a specific location, and haven’t found the answer on our website, send us an e-mail and we’ll write back with the answer or let you know who the best contact is for your specific information request.
