Wyoming to get $2.3 million for schools & roads
Part of $380 million to be distributed to 41 states and Puerto Rico
December 21, 2005

(Washington DC) U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary, Mike Johanns, announced on Wednesday that more than $380 million will be distributed to 41 states and Puerto Rico for improvements to public schools and roads. The money is 25% of the revenue the Forest Services generates from timber sales, mineral resources, grazing fees and other sources which is returned to the states in which the national forest lands are located. The funding is distributed as part of the Secure Rural Schools Act which helps provide funding for schools and roads.

Wyoming will get $2,363,789.16. Oregon received the largest payment, more than $146 million, California will receive $64.5 million and Washington $41.8 million. The payments do not include national grassland revenues, which are calculated on a calendar year basis and will be paid to counties in March.

Counties may use the funds for specific purposes including search & rescue and emergency services on federal lands; community service work camps; conservation and recreation easements; forestry related after-school activities; and fire prevention and planning.
