Yellowstone Park roads open for winter season
Winter season begins Wednesday, December 21 for oversnow vehicles
December 21, 2005

(Yellowstone National Park) Yellowstone National Park roads are scheduled to open for the winter season to oversnow vehicles (snowmobiles and snowcoaches) at 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 21, 2005, provided sufficient snow has accumulated to allow for safe travel conditions. Groomed roads will be open for winter sports through early March, depending on snow conditions.

The road from the park’s North Entrance at Gardiner, Montana, to the Northeast Entrance at Cooke City, Montana, is the only road open year-round to automobile traffic. This road is subject to temporary closures, and chains or snow tires may be required at any time due to hazardous winter driving conditions.

Special restrictions apply for snowmobile use in the park, so be sure to check out the rules and requirements on the park website before planning a snowmobiling trip to Yellowstone. Information on winter use is available at http://www.nps.gov/yell/planvisit/winteruse/index.htm.
