Game action at Riverton

The Pinedale Midget/HS age hockey team resumed WAHL action this weekend in Riverton. They managed to win one game, tie one game and lose a game, for a total of 3 points going towards getting them into the playoffs.
Friday night saw Pinedale take on a strong Douglas team. Douglas scored two goals in the first five minutes of the game on a five minute power play and that was all the scoring they needed. They went on to score six goals, but Pinedale’s Preston Schwab broke the shutout by scoring a goal assisted by Drew Guenthner and John Colton. The game was played mostly in the penalty kill or power play mode for there were 17 penalties given out between the two teams. Even Coach Sheppard received a two minute penalty (bench minor) for trying to help the referee with his officiating duties. Chris Manning in goal for Pinedale made 29 saves on 35 shots. Final score Douglas 6 – Pinedale 1.
Saturday morning saw Pinedale take on host Riverton. Riverton out-shot Pinedale 38 to 24, but Pinedale made their shots count by scoring 3 goals and Pinedale goalie, John Stach, did his job shutting out the Riverton attackers. He did not allow any goals on 38 shots. Scoring for Pinedale were Drew Guenthner assisted by Kathryn Konicek, Preston Schwab assisted by Drew Guenthner and Drew Guenthner assisted by Lincoln Proud. Final score Pinedale 3 – Riverton 0.
The final game of the weekend was a “barn burner”! Pinedale was to play Cody, who they had lost to only a month ago by 2 goals. Cody came out strong and scored the first two goals, but Pinedale’s Forrest Michnevich took a nice pass from Drew Guenthner from behind the net and sunk the puck in the goal. Then Preston Schwab made a similar play from Guenthner to tie the game up 2-2. Cody then scored 5 unanswered goals to go up on the tired looking Pinedale team 7-2, before Pinedale’s Drew Guenthner scored a goal assisted by Joe Pearce just before the end of the second period to put the game at 7-3. During the zamboni break between the second and third period it did not look good for the Pinedale team, but Cody did not know that they had just lit a fire under Pinedale’s “spark plug” Drew Guenthner. He came out in the third period and scored 3 more goals assisted by Forrest Michnevich on all of the goals and then Michael McDaniel scored a goal assisted by Guenthner to tie the game up 7-7 with only 1 minute left to go in the game. The final score was Pinedale 7 – Cody 7. Drew Guenthner had a hat trick (3 goals – actually he had 4) and playmaker (3 assists) and Forrest Michnevich had a playmaker (3 assists) during the game. Pinedale’s two goalies (John Stach and Chris Manning) combined for the tie. John played the first two periods stopping 16 of 23 shots and Chris came in the last period and stopped all 6 shots Cody put on him.
Pinedale’s next action will be at home Jan. 28-29 against the Casper Oilers. Come out and watch these young athletes in action. Watch your local paper and listen to the radio station for times of those games at the Pinedale Ice Arena.
