Museum receives WY Community Foundation Grant
Museum acquires unique buffalo hide tipi from Michael Terry

The Sublette County Historical Society / Museum of the Mountain Man has received notice that they have been awarded a sizeable grant from the Gayle McMurry Kinnison Donor Advised Fund of the Wyoming Community Foundation.
According to Laurie Hartwig, Director of the Museum, the donation from Ms. Kinnison is the acquisition and exhibition of the Chief American Horse Native American Encampment, circa 1876, by Michael Terry of Warrior's Plus.
This outstanding educational exhibit features a 20 foot buffalo hide tipi and all the accoutrements and furnishings that accompany this tipi. It is a fascinating and beautiful display that will be show-cased inside the Museum of the Mountain Man's inner rotunda later this spring and according to Hartwig, there are only 35 buffalo hide tipis in the world. This particular replica has been fashioned after the Chief American Horse tipi of the Lakota Sioux, located in the Smithsonian, Washington D.C.
Michael Terry is a Native American historian, replica maker and author of Seminole descent. His first-hand experience and knowledge of the history, culture and way of life of the Plains Indians will enrich the presentation of this exhibit. Terry is a regular guest speaker at the museum's Green River Rendezvous Days and this will be his thirteenth year in attendance.
The Sublette County Historical Society was founded in 1936 and is the oldest society in the State of Wyoming. The Historical Society, which oversees the Museum of the Mountain Man, is dedicated to preserving the history of the mountain man and fur trade, Western history, Native American history and the settlement period of Sublette County.
The SCHS/ MMM has collaborated with The Wyoming Community Foundation on a number of projects and programs over the past few years. Last year, the WCF funded the re-publication of "Memories of Kendall Valley" by Richard Hecox, recognizing the value and importance of making his history available to the public for future generations.
The Wyoming Community Foundation is a philanthropic nonprofit organization that administers funds established by individuals, families, corporations, agencies and private foundations. The Foundation uses the income from these gifts to benefit community needs across the state of Wyoming.
"We are so grateful to Gayle and the Wyoming Community Foundation for this incredible donation," says Hartwig, "the magnitude and importance of this exhibit will be enjoyed by thousands of people for many, many years."
