EnCana gives local scholarships
Ben Gunn and James Easton receive $10,000 towards their college education
May 30, 2006
Benjamin Gunn of Pinedale High School and James Easton of Big Piney High School were awarded the 2006 EnCana High School Scholarship for outstanding academic achievement, strong commitment to the community and determination to purse a career in the natural gas industry. Gunn and Easton will each receive $2,500 annually for four years, totaling $10,000 toward their college education.
EnCana’s four-year scholarship is awarded annually to one graduating student in each school district within an EnCana area of operation, who is pursuing a degree in engineering, geology or geophysics.
Gunn plans to study Mining Engineering at Montana Tech. An active member of the Pinedale FFA Chapter, Gunn is also on the football team and has been on the Honor Role every semester throughout high school. For the past two years, Gunn helped set up the County Fair and also volunteered for the Community Clean Up Day, cleaning up local highways in Pinedale.
"I’d like to thank EnCana for supporting me as I go on to study Mining Engineering," said Gunn. "Our natural resources are dwindling, and I’d like to be involved in creating more efficient ways of extracting these minerals."
Easton plans to study Engineering at the University of Wyoming. For the past five years, Easton has enjoyed playing hockey for the USA hockey team. He is also a member of the National Honor Society and has had an active role in student council. Since 1998, Easton has been volunteering at the community Soup Supper.
"To better understand how things work, I’ve always enjoyed taking them apart and putting them back together," said Easton. "This is what’s fueled my interests in engineering and I’d like to thank EnCana for giving me the opportunity to study engineering at UW."
The natural gas industry is constantly growing and in need of highly skilled and trained workers. EnCana’s High School Scholarship Program supports the overall effort of expanding the workforce in Wyoming.
"These scholarships give our youth the opportunity to continue and complete a higher education, that will not only educate, but also motivate them to come back and work at home," said Chris House, EnCana’s production coordinator.
The scholarship is awarded directly to the student, and can be used for any college-related financial need, including tuition and fees, textbooks and rent. Each school district is responsible for selecting the scholarship recipient.
