Snow possible for Memorial Day weekend
Dramatic change in the weather predicted: Cold, rain, thunderstorms, and snow in the mountains
May 25, 2006
The National Weather Service is advising that a significant change in the weather is on the way for Memorial Day weekend in western Wyoming, with the possibility of snow. That’s a big change from our 70s and 80 degree weather we’ve been enjoying for some time now!
A large Pacific storm system is expected to move into western Wyoming on Saturday bringing showers and thunderstorms. By Saturday evening, temperatures will drop dramatically in western Wyoming and the northern mountains.
Snow will develop in the mountains over 8,000 feet. Heavy, wet snow is predicted to continue through Saturday night and Sunday morning, with the snow level decreasing to around 7,000 feet (Pinedale is 7,100 feet).
The western and northern mountains could see snow accumulations of 2-4 inches. Some areas above 9,500 feet may receive up to 7 inches of snow.
Snowfall below 7,000 feet is expected to melt as it falls, with little or no accumulation.
Temperatures across the western and northern mountains are expected to drop into the mid to upper 20s Saturday and Sunday night. High temperatures on Sunday are expected to be in the 30s across the mountains.
Travelers and campers planning their Memorial Day excursions into western Wyoming should be prepared for winter-like weather in the mountains for Saturday through Sunday. Memorial Day is expected to be cool and showery across western and central Wyoming.
