Pinedale student wins USFS Poster Contest
1st Grade Smokey Bear/Woodsy Owl Poster Contest

(Pinedale) Pinedale Elementary School student, Cassidy Mitchelson, won first place in the first grade division of the Rocky Mountain Region Garden Club’s Smokey Bear/Woodsy Owl poster contest. She then went on to win Honorable Mention at the National Contest where she placed fourth out of approximately 6,000 first grade students from across the nation. Cassidy is in Mrs. Konicek’s first grade class and was one of 16 local students to enter the contest.
Cassidy’s poster was selected from entries sent in from eight western states, Wyoming, Utah, Montana, Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas, to represent the Region at the National Poster Contest. Posters are judged on originality, design, slogan, artwork, and overall effectiveness of the message. The National Winning posters from each grade level may be viewed at www.symbols.gov.
The USDA Forest Service and the National Garden Clubs Inc., sponsors the Smokey Bear Poster Contest every year to promote wildfire prevention education and conservation, emphasizing everyone’s role of self-responsibility for our environment. The poster contest is open to students from 1st to 5th grade.
This year the theme of the poster contest, "Help Us Stop the Invaders," was preventing the spread of invasive species in our nation. Invasive species can be plants and animals, and other organisms (e.g. microbes) that are non-native to an area. Human actions are the primary means of invasive introductions.
Cassidy was presented with a framed copy of the poster, a plaque, and a $50.00 savings bond and stuffed Smokey Bear Beanie Bear from the Sage and Garden Club at the school’s awards assembly on Friday, June 2. A framed copy of her poster will be on display at the Pinedale Elementary School. The student’s posters were displayed at the Pinedale Public Library’s Lovatt room from May 15 thru 26.
