The Green River Valley Land Trust has a series of fun outdoor field trips planned over the next couple of months. If you want to go on any of these trips, call and reserve early. There is limited space and these trips fill up quickly. All trips are FREE (but they will happily accept any donations to help support their Land Trust efforts)! July 18: Roping for Dummies Green River Valley Land Trust Summer Field Trip. 11 am – 2 pm Expand your knowledge and perfect your skill. Join local cowboy and experienced roper Saul Bencomo and friends for a review of the basics of roping. Whether you’re experienced or an eager beginner, Saul will offer tips to improve your roping technique, teach new skills, and break bad habits. He will also address rope selection to make your next day on the range more enjoyable. Meet at the Sublette County Rodeo Grounds in Pinedale at 10:45am. Wear comfortable clothes and bring sun protection .Lunch will be provided.
JULY 20: Goin’ Dutch 4 pm – 6:30 pm Your mouth is watering with the pleasing aroma of food cooked outdoors in a dutch oven. Enjoy the relaxing atmosphere and beautiful views of the Flying Fish Hook Ranch in Boulder and learn from the best as chefs Dwayne and LaRae explain the basic techniques of this cooking style. The best part of the trip – you not only learn to prepare a delicious dinner, but then you get the chance to eat it! Bring your appetite and a chair for your seating comfort! Meet at the Boulder Store on Highway 191 in Boulder south of Pinedale at 3:30 pm sharp.
JULY 24: Arts and Crafts Are For the Birds, 9 am – 11:30 am Kids love art! And, who doesn’t enjoy learning more about birds? Spend a morning completing several bird-related art projects – from painting wooden birdhouses to making bird hand- prints. Then, Barb Wise a.k.a. “The Bird Lady” will offer attendees the chance to visit with her fine feathered friends. Over a snack, we’ll talk about the importance of open space to birds and other wildlife. Everyone is welcome, but this trip is particularly intended for families with children. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Meet at the Sublette County Library, Pinedale, at 9:00 am. Snacks will be provided.
JULY 26: Covering Ground, 10 am – 1 pm Many of the things you already know about the land around us are true, but few people are aware of the many different kinds of grasses and forbs that exist, and fewer still are able to distinguish between them. Join Natural Resource Conservation Service Rangeland Management Specialist Karen Clause for the chance to really study “what’s on the ground.” Several Sublette County sites will provide the opportunity to study and learn more about a number of species. Spend some time learning to recognize these fascinating plants and take home new tools for identification and a greater appreciation for their diversity. Meet at the GRVLT office in Pinedale at 136 West Pine at 9:3 0am. Bring your own hand lens, if you have one. Plan for a walk and wear appropriate shoes; bring sun protection and rain gear.
AUGUST 9: Sunset Hike to Sacred Rim, 4 pm – 9 pm Rising abruptly from the Green River Valley and the sagebrush-clad hills, the Wind River Range pierces the sky with 12,000 and 13,000-foot summits that span 110 miles from Pass. The Wind Rivers form a triple divide – providing water to three major western rivers: the Gros Ventre, the Green, and the Wind. From the Sacred Rim overlook the views are stunning; in fact, they are described as the best views anywhere of the Wind River skyline. Enjoy a beautiful summer sunset with a Pass. Enjoy a beautiful summer sunset with a distance into Elkhart Park. About 200 yards past an A-frame information station, the road forks. Go left at the fork and meet in the parking lot at 3:45 pm sharp. Sturdy legs required; bring sun protection, rain gear, a headlight and warm clothes. Dinner will be provided.
AUGUST 15: Trail Mix, 9 am – 3 pm. Saddle up to enjoy a ride and take in awe inspiring views of Sublette County by horseback. Join BLM Archeologist Dave Vlcek for the chance to see some of the County’s lesser known cultural and historical artifacts. Over lunch, we’ll discuss the importance of the County’s private lands. Meeting location will be determined, and participants will be notified as they sign-up. Bring your own well-shod horse (no studs please). Dress for variable temperatures. Picnic lunch provided.
AUGUST 30: Young At Art, 9 am – 11:30 am Back by popular demand, former teacher and artist Judy Vana will lead participants in a variety of children’s art projects. Join us for what will be a fun-filled morning! Everyone is welcome, but this trip is particularly intended for families with children. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Meet at the American Legion Park, Pinedale at 9:00 am. Snacks will be provided.
SEPTEMBER 22: Star Trek, 7 pm – 9:30 pm Enjoy a night under the stars, see the constellations, identify major celestial features, and listen to stories of the night sky told by local science teacher Elaine Crumpley. View the moon, planets, star clusters, nebula, galaxies and more. Meet at Daniel Junction store parking lot on 189/191 at 6:30 pm sharp. Bring your binoculars, family telescope or camera. Bring warm clothes and chairs or blankets for your seating comfort. Please also bring a headlight. Warm drinks and dessert
OCTOBER 30: A Grave Situation, 3 pm – 6 pm If you’re "dying" to learn more about some of Sublette County’s notable characters, then this is the trip for you. Join us for a walkabout at some of the area’s cemeteries. Local historian and well-known storyteller Ann Noble will entertain us with her tales of people and places from the past. Meet at the GRVLT office in Pinedale at 136 West Pine at 2:45 pm. Plan for light walking and dress warmly. (Tricks) and treats will be provided.
