Fire danger raised to EXTREME

The Bridger-Teton National Forest (BTNF) raised the fire danger rating from Very High to EXTREME this afternoon.
According to BTNF Public Information Officer Nan Stinson, campfire restrictions remain the same under the new rating. Campfires are allowed only in developed campgrounds. Portable campstoves are permitted.
Under the Extreme rating, fire conditions are described as:
"The fire situation is explosive and can result in extensive property damage. Fires under extreme conditions start quickly, spread furiously, and burn intensely. All fires are potentially serious. Development into high-intensity burning will usually be faster and occur from smaller fires than in the very high danger class. Direct attack is rarely possible, and may be dangerous, except immediately after ignition. Fires burning in heavy slash or in conifer stands may be unmanageable while the extreme burning condition lasts. Under these conditions, the only effective and safe control action is on the flanks until the weather changes or the fuel supply lessens."
Hunters, campers and outdoor recreationists are advised that there are closures in several areas of the Forest in the Upper Green River due to wildfires. Closures are in effect west of Union Pass for the Purdy fire, although the Union Pass Road is currently open. The Moose-Gypsum road is closed due to the Battle Mountain fire, which is now at 1,370 acres and 75% contained. Jim Creek and Pot Creek Roads are closed due to the Jim Creek fire, which is now 2,800 acres in size and being allowed to burn for resource benefit in the Bridger Wilderness.
Drivers are asked to be alert for fire traffic on Forest roads in the Upper Green. ATV riders are being specifically asked to slow down and watch for fire traffic on roads in the Upper Green River area.
