October is a transition month here in the high country. The weather will range from cold snow showers to warm sunny afternoons. The trout will continue to feed regardless of the weather in order to prepare themselves for the winter. The burst of surface moisture we have had the past few days has increased the flow in many of our streams prompting the use of larger streamer patterns such as the Beldar series of flies, double bunny patterns and the old standby wooly buggers. Adding a nymph trailer to these patterns will give you a good one-two punch. Try nymph patterns like Bird of Prey, Hares Ear, Zebra Johns and Prince.
Do not count out some surface action. The warm afternoons will still bring out some hoppers. I use hoppers from early June to late October. My theory is that the trout does not know if it is the first hopper of the season or the last, but it is still an excellent meal. Use hoppers, bugmeisters or other surface attractors as lead flies and trail them with some of the nymphs mentioned above. You will be pleasantly surprised at the amount of surface takes.
Stay in bed an extra hour and have a second cup of coffee to let the day warm-up to improve your chances of running into feeding fish.
