How do I start a business in Wyoming?

Starting a business in Wyoming is generally easier than in other states, but the answer to this question depends on the type of business you would like to start.
For instance, starting a service business from your home is easier than starting a construction or manufacturing business. Some Wyoming communities require a business license, others do not. More registration is required if you will hire employees than if you plan to work alone. The legal form of business you choose also will influence what is required to get started.
The Wyoming Small Business Development Center (WSBDC) offices around the state are the best place to research what will be required for a specific business. To locate the office nearest you, visit the web site at www.uwyo.edu/sbdc or call 1-800-348-5194. Business startup classes are offered in various locations throughout the state and are an inexpensive way to receive the basic information. Business counselors are available to give you free, confidential guidance to get started.
If you are not sure what products or services you would like to offer, visit Entrepreneur.com at this Web site: www.entrepreneur.com. This site provides a list of low cost startup ideas for businesses. Another good source is the Small Business Administration web site at www.sba.gov.
Thorough research before starting a business can mean the difference between success and failure. Take the time to look at the feasibility of any idea you choose for your area, your personality, your resources and the customers you would like to serve.
The WSBDC is a partnership of the U.S. Small Business Administration, the Wyoming Business Council and the University of Wyoming. To ask a question call 1-800-348-5194, (307) 766-3505, e-mail wsbdc@uwyo.edu or write Dept. 3922, 1000 East University Ave., Laramie, WY 82071-3922.
