University of Wyoming President Tom Buchanan recently presented University of Wyoming trustees a report of recent major accomplishments at UW. Among them were:
Jason Shogren, UW's Stroock Distinguished Professor of Natural Resource Conservation and Management and an economics professor in the UW College of Business, has accepted a royal appointment as Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf's professor of environmental science for the 2007-2008 academic year. Shogren will work with Umea University's Institute of Economics and Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences' Institute of Forest Economics and will lecture throughout Sweden about humans, society and nature.
John H. Vandel, dean of the UW School of Pharmacy, was elected honorary president of the American Pharmacists Association, recognizing his lifetime of distinguished public service and contributions to the profession and the organization. He will be installed at the organization's annual meeting in March.
Edward Barbier, the John S. Bugas Professor of Economics at UW, was among a group of ecologists and economists contributing to an article detailing that a loss of biodiversity is profoundly reducing the ocean's ability to produce seafood. Their research was published in the November issue of the prestigious scientific journal, Science.
Eric Regehr, a UW Ph.D. candidate in zoology and physiology and United States Geological Survey (USGS) employee, is a member of a research team that confirmed a connection between global warming and decreased polar bear survival. Regehr and the researchers spent the last two years analyzing polar bear data collected by the Canadian Wildlife Service in Canada's western Hudson Bay. One of Regehr's colleagues is George Durner, UW Ph.D. candidate who for 14 years has conducted polar bear research for the USGS.
The American Diabetes Association is providing $420,000 to renew a three-year junior faculty award for Nair Sreejayan, assistant professor of pharmacology in the College of Health Sciences. Sreejayan's project focuses on the development of novel chromium complexes for potential use as a dietary supplement to prevent and treat type II diabetes and insulin resistant conditions.
The National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences honored two UW Cooperative Extension Service employees. Marilou Vaughn, Cent$ible Nutrition Program assistant project coordinator in Fremont County, was honored for her work to help Wyoming citizens eat better for less. Campbell, Crook and Weston counties educator Vicki Hayman and her team received a national community partnership award for their Medicare education efforts.

The UW policy debaters finished the semester as the nation's ninth-best team in the National Debate Tournament Varsity rankings, and were first in the region. During the fall semester, UW debaters finished among the top 16 teams or better during contests at Harvard, Northern Iowa, Emporia, Georgia State, Claremont, Berkeley, Casper, Northwest College, and Colorado College, and have had 13 individual speakers in the top five at tournaments.
Strong safety John Wendling was named to ESPN the Magazine's second team Academic All-America team. Wendling, a business administration senior from Rock Springs, was selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, and was one of only two Mountain West Conference football student-athletes to earn the honor.
