State Science Fair Sweepstake Winners at UW
Pinedale's Erica David repeats as winner

(Laramie, Wyoming) - Students from Pinedale and Cody repeated as sweepstakes winners at the recent Wyoming State Science Fair held at the University of Wyoming.
Pinedale High School student Erica David, and Brandon Reavis of Cody High School, along with Brian Reavis, also of Cody, were the Wyoming State Science Fair Sweepstakes winners in the senior division. David and Brandon Reavis also topped last year's competition.
David won the overall top first place award in environmental science with her project, "Boards & Branches: Year 6 -- A Multivariate Study of Impacts of Snow Interception for Water Conservation." She won a $250 award for her wining entry and also a $1,000 scholarship from UW.
Brandon and Brian Reavis won the senior team competition with their project, "Fluorotype: A System to Transcode info embedded in UV-reactive data matrices." The pair also received a $250 award for winning the senior division and each received a $250 scholarship from UW.
David and the Reavis brothers are now eligible to compete in the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) this May in Albuquerque, N.M. At last year's ISEF, David won the Grand Category Award and the overall top first place prize in environmental science and several thousand dollars in prize money. Brandon Reavis won a $10,000 scholarship from the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Foundation for outstanding achievement in the area of engineering.
More than 300 students from nearly 50 Wyoming schools participated in this year's state science fair March 4-6 on the UW campus. Awards were presented for first through fourth places in junior (grades 6-8) and senior (grades 9-12) divisions in these categories: behavioral and social sciences, chemistry, engineering, medicine and health, zoology, invention (grades 6-8), biochemistry, computers, environmental sciences, microbiology, botany, earth and space sciences, mathematics, physics and teams.
A panel of more than 100 judges from UW and other organizations evaluated projects based on scientific thought/engineering goals, creative ability, thoroughness, skill and clarity.
Special awards were presented at a ceremony in the Wyoming Union Yellowstone Ballroom, which included cash and prizes provided by UW colleges and departments, the armed services and state and national businesses and organizations. Category and grand prize awards also were presented by various UW departments and colleges.
Other major awards were presented at the conclusion of the competition.
Maggie Hudlow of Pinedale Middle School and Laramie Junior High School student Harraz MohdReza were named the Junior Division Sweepstakes winners.
Three students each received $500 scholarships from UW. They are Jayme Fraser of Cody High School, Rebecca Rapf of Sheridan High School and Juliann Terry of Newcastle High School.
Rapf also qualified for the ISEF competition along with Christopher Hall and Christopher Hederman of Greybull High School.
Several other students also qualified for the international competition from their ISEF-affiliated regional science fairs.
Representing the Northeast Regional Fair are Chloe Cundall and Ashley Sylvester, both from Greybull High School, and the Reavis brothers. From the Southeast Regional Fair are Cheyenne Central High School representatives Beth Cochran and Shanna Wolff.
