(Laramie, Wyoming) - University of Wyoming students will travel to various locations across the United States to do volunteer work during a second consecutive Alternative Spring Break (ASB). Two UW students from Big Piney are particpating in the program: Amanda Blair and Shawn Kautzsch.
The UW ABS program was launched last year in response to the devastating Gulf Coast hurricanes. Last March, 50 UW students volunteered to forego the traditional spring break and traveled to Waveland, Miss., to clear lots, sort through debris and help families rebuild their lives.
Citing the overwhelming success of ASB 2006, the UW Center for Volunteer Service (CVS) has expanded this year's program to include different destinations. At each site, students will gain insight into societal issues and experience hands-on service learning.
Service sites for the 2007 trip, scheduled for March 11-18, are: an urban plunge with the National Coalition for the Homeless in Washington D.C.; a conservation trip to protect and restore native wildlife habitats with Plateau Restoration in Moab, Utah; a return visit to the Gulf Coast to help hurricane victims rebuild homes in Pass Christian, Miss.; and a trip to assist the Southern Ute Community Program to work with Head Start youths in Ignacio, Colo.
"I am constantly amazed at how many UW students volunteer for so many different things," says Robyn Paulekas, CVS program adviser. "We have noticed that almost all of the students who went to the Gulf Coast last year volunteer more, and are more involved in community activities. They apply some of the lessons they learned to their experiences in their classes and in their personal lives."
Participants from our regional Wyoming area for the Washington D.C. trip are: Big Piney -- Amanda Blair Big Piney -- Shawn Kautzsch Rock Springs -- Brynn Hvidston Riverton -- John Kindle Evanston -- Rebeccah Reedy Jackson -- Brittany Peters Kemmerer -- Jacqui Frost
