Weather Spotter training in Pinedale May 17

The NOAA National Weather Service will be conducting a Weather Spotter Training class in Pinedale on Thursday, May 17. The training session will take place in the basement of the Sublette County Sheriff’s Office beginning at 1:00 p.m. The two-hour class is free of charge and open to anyone with an interest in thunderstorms, weather, or public safety. All course materials are provided and completion cards will be given to all volunteers.
During active thunderstorm days, trained spotters provide timely reports that can play a vital role in the weather warning process. “Trained spotters provided valuable, real-time reports to our office in Riverton during a large hailstorm last year,” said Warning Coordination Meteorologist Chris Jones.
The volunteer network of spotters provides helpful ground truth reports that assist meteorologists in issuing warnings for tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, and flash floods.
“We are always looking for new spotters, but we also encourage current spotters to attend one of these sessions as a refresher,” Jones said.
Currently, the National Weather Service in Riverton has over 1,000 trained spotters across eleven counties in western Wyoming.
The two-hour multimedia training session will provide volunteers with information on important thunderstorm characteristics, types of severe weather, weather safety, and reporting procedures.
