We are posting this story as preliminary information, but qualify it to our readers by saying as yet we have no official information to further verify the reason for, or extent of, this outage:
If your Hughes Net satellite internet service crashed Friday evening, you might be one of the ones being affected by an apparent system outage for the company. We haven’t seen any press coverage on this yet, and Hughesnet.com does not have any news announcements posted on their website (www.hughesnet.com), but when we finally did get through on their support phone line (and could catch about every 3rd word of their recording) they said they are experiencing a system outage on at least three different satellites. As a customer, we tried to use our system identification to log in, however the system responded saying our site data and password weren't recognized.
Satellite high-speed internet access is about the only way many people who live in rural areas away from towns can get high speed internet access because land line and wireless alternatives are not available. It's a reality of the computer world that all online service providers experience system down time at one time or another. Statistically, the up time is typically around 99.9%. For those whose businesses rely on constant internet access, that .1% downtime is always very inconvenient no matter when it occurs.
Hughes Network Systems is a global leader in broadband satellite network solutions and services. The company is headquartered in Washington D.C. and maintains support offices world-wide. Earlier this month, the company announced a recent U.S. General Services Administration Networx Enterprise contract with Sprint to provide managed network access and internet services via broadband satellite as a subcontractor in support of federal mission-critical telecommunications requirements.
No more details could be found at the time of this report about the extent of the Hughes satellite outage or an estimate on when internet services might come back online.
Editor's Note, added Saturday, June 30th: The outage lasted for approximately 4-1/2 hours, from about 6 PM to 10:30 PM Friday, June 29th.
