Big Piney-Marbleton Rec Center Update
by Pinedale Online!
July 25, 2007
Members of the Big Piney-Marbleton Joint Powers Recreation Board held a Community Meeting and Ice Cream Social at the Marbleton Town Hall on Tuesday night, July 24, to show the public the updated plans for the proposed Big Piney-Marbleton Recreation Center.
The Board has secured an 8.3-acre piece of land on the east side of Marbleton for the project. That parcel is two blocks east of the Marbleton Senior Center, near 1st and Columbine streets in the Eiden 2nd Addition subdivision.
The building floor plan has gone through many revisions, but the basic features they hope to include are a basketball gymnasium, a wrestling gym, exercise equipment room, a climbing wall, raquetball court, a teen activity room and lounge area, a bowling alley, kitchen area, party room and locker rooms. The second story would have an elevated running track that overlooks some of the activity areas on the first floor.
The proposed building, depending on what is ultimately included, will cost between $13 million to $17.8 million to build. Once it is built, it will cost an estimated $350,000 per year to run and maintain. The towns of Marbleton and Big Piney, and Sublette County Commissioners, have already contributed some funding for the project, including the purchase of the land. Promoters must now work to obtain further support for the project and additional funding commitments.
The project is being spearheaded by a county joint powers board, with the Town of Marbleton, Big Piney and Sublette County as cooperators. The price tag of this project is on par with that of Pinedale’s new Aquatic Center, which is close to completion, which also has similar recreational facilities, in addition to pools. The Big Piney-Marbleton facility has a bowling alley in the design rather than a pool. The current pool for the south-county area is located in the old Big Piney school complex.
Organizers are asking people to write letters of support for the project that they can take with them to an upcoming meeting of the Sublette County Commissioners on Tuesday, August 21st, which will be held at the Marbleton Town Hall. Their time slot before the Commissioners will be at 10:30 am. Organizers hope that a lot of the community will attend this part of the meeting to show their support for the new Recreation Center.
Anyone who would like more information on the Rec Center project can call Angie Smith at 307-276-3066 or e-mail her at angiesmith@wyoming.com.
This board is also seeking a new member to fill a recent vacancy. To apply, drop off a letter of application to Sublette County Clerk, Mary Lankford, at the Sublette County Courthouse in Pinedale.
