Horse Creek Fire Update
100% Contained; Crews doing mop-up; Horse Creek Road still closed; Partial Fire Restrictions in effect
by Pinedale Online!
July 8, 2007

The Horse Creek Fire was deemed 100% Contained on Monday, July 2nd. Ultimately, it reached 8,590 acres in size. The fire is located on the Big Piney Ranger District of the Bridger-Teton National Forest about 25 miles west of Daniel, Wyoming in the Horse Creek drainage of the northern Wyoming Range.

The blaze started on June 21st due to unknown causes. It started fairly small, then strong winds spread the fire quickly and it grew from approximately 35 acres to over 8500 acres as it moved south into Pass Creek and the South Horse Creek drainages. For several days, the blaze threatened at least one private home.

The fire was transitioned back to a local management team on Tuesday, July 3rd. Crews are doing mop-up of hot spots and rehabilitation. No further growth is expected from this fire.

The upper end of the Horse Creek Road beyond the snowmobile parking lot west of Merna remains closed except to authorized personnel.

Fire danger is rated as EXTREME on the Bridger-Teton National Forest. Stage I fire restrictions are in effect limiting campfires to developed campgrounds on the National Forest, BLM and in Sublette County. Fireworks are prohibited year-round on National Forest and everywhere in Sublette County.

For more information about this fire, contact Mary Cernicek with the Bridger-Teton National Forest, 307-739-5564.
