Snake River Canyon reopened
Mud slides and debris cleared from US 89 between Hoback and Alpine Junctions
September 5, 2007

6:36 PM Update: U.S. 29/89 through Snake River Canyon between Hoback Junction and Alpine Junction has been reopened.

Wyoming Department of Transportation issued a release reporting that road crews finished clearing debris off the highway. The road was reopened around 6:30 PM Wednesday evening. The road was closed Wednesday afternoon due to two mud/rock slides on the west end of the canyon which were caused by heavy rains from thunderstorms. One of the slides was reported to be 190 feet long and five feet deep with mud, boulders and ripped trees across the roadway.

Several weeks ago heavy rains from thunderstorms triggered four separate mud slides in Hoback Canyon, closing U.S. 191 for several hours. There were no reported slides in Hoback Canyon due to today's storm.

A Flood or Flash Flood Watch remains in effect for Teton and Gros Ventre Mountains, Jackson Hole, Wind River Mountains West, Wind River Mountains East, Star Valley
Salt River and Wyoming Ranges, Upper Green River Basin Foothills, Upper Green River Basin, South Lincoln County.
