Citizens Protecting the Wyoming Range asks for e-mails
Want the Wyoming Range withdrawn from future oil and gas leasing
October 20, 2007
Citizens Protecting the Wyoming Range, a group that is working to stop further oil and gas drilling in the Wyoming Range, has put out a call for help requesting interested persons send e-mails in this next week to Wyoming Senator John Barrasso’s office supporting legislation to protect the Wyoming Range from oil and gas development.
The Wyoming Range forms the western boundary of the Upper Green River Valley and is managed by the U.S. Forest Service as part of the Bridger-Teton National Forest. The area has seen increased interest by oil and gas companies that hope to expand their exploration efforts to find more oil and gas reserves that may lie beneath the surface there.
The group hopes to get the Senator to support legislation this month that will withdraw the Wyoming Range from future oil and gas leasing. They want some 44,600 acres of contested oil and gas leases to be included within a withdrawal boundary.
“This acreage is the gateway to the Wyoming Range, the place where hunters and outfitters set up camps and one of the most important areas from which to access the Range,” states a flyer they mailed out recently. “The Forest Service has the ability to just cancel these leases and Senator Barrasso should urge them to take this action now.” They ask e-mails be sent to the Senator at: Senator_JBarrasso@barrasso.senate.gov.
Citizens Protecting the Wyoming Range is based out of Daniel, Wyoming, west of Pinedale. It is comprised of local landowners, anglers, outfitters, hunters, ranchers and business owners “united in the belief that rampant drilling in Sublette County should not be allowed to spread into this special part of the Bridger-Teton National Forest,” according to their website.
