It's the chance only a few photographers have each year - having a photo appear in the Wyoming Game and Fish Department's Wyoming Wildlife magazine - and this year that photographer could be you.
Wyoming Wildlife is accepting entries for its 2007 photo contest. Images must be taken in Wyoming. Categories are wildlife, scenic/pictorial, recreational and flora, and may be color or black and white. The grand prize or best photo of the entire show garners $300.
First place in each category receives $150, second $100 and third $50. Winning entries will be featured in the February 2008 issue. Noteworthy entries that do not place may be selected for the annual April essay issue.
Entries may be 35mm (or larger) slides or 8-by-10-inch prints. Photos taken with digital equipment will be accepted, but editing must be limited to traditional printing techniques such as altering saturation and contrast, burning, dodging and eliminating dust spots. Images in which content is added, eliminated or rearranged will not be accepted.
Associate Wyoming Wildlife editor Ty Stockton urges potential photographers to pick their images apart detail by detail to ensure your best chance at selection.
"Look first for sharp focus. The subject, or main element such as the animal's eye, should be tack sharp," he says. "Then look for other elements that may be distracting. If there's a fence or a power line in the frame, find another shot from that series that doesn't show the distracting element."
Stockton also advises having prints produced at a professional print shop or photo studio for the best possible reproduction, or investing in high-quality photo paper if choosing to use a home printer.
"Even the most fantastic photograph will look muddy on plain paper. You spent a lot of time to capture that image, so invest the time and cost to reproduce a print nearly identical to what you saw in the field when you captured that special moment," he explains.
"You don't need to be a professional photographer to win the Wyoming Wildlife photo contest, but the more attention you pay to the details the better your photo and your chances of landing the cover of Wyoming's premier wildlife magazine."
Entries are due to the Game and Fish Cheyenne office by Nov. 27, 2007. Entry forms are available in the September, October and November issues of Wyoming Wildlife, or on the Game and Fish Web site at http://gf.state.wy.us by clicking on Publications and Art.
The magazine is available at newsstands or by subscribing at (800) 710-8345 for $12.95 a year.
