Wyoming Senior Winter Games Feb. 11-14
Ice Skating, Alpine and Nordic snow events hosted at White Pine Ski Area & Resort

The 2008 Wyoming Senior Winter Games will be hosted at White Pine Ski Area & Resort Monday through Thursday, February 11-14th. The event is open to participants age 50 or older.

The four-day event includes a variety of sports including ice skating (speed skating, hockey goal shoot), Alpine (slaloms), and Nordic (snow shoe race, biathlon, cross-country, snowball biathlon, Alpine-Nordic relay, skate skiing, races. There will also be a couple inter-generational events, allowing pairing with a child or grandchild. Most of the events will take place at White Pine Ski Area & Resort, located 10 miles from Pinedale. The ice skating events will be held at the Sublette County Ice Arena in town.

There will be a chili dinner on Monday night and a banquet on Wednesday evening. Awards ceremonies for the events of each day will take place at 4:00 PM at the White Pine lodge. Special room rates are available for those who stay at the Log Cabin Motel, The Lodge at Pinedale or High Country Suites (book by January 14).

GENERAL:
Registration and entry fees ($40) must be received prior to January 14th, 2008. Registration after January 14th will be charged an additional $20. On-site registration and distribution of the bibs will take place Sunday, February 10 from 1:00 to 4:00 PM and Monday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the White Pine Ski Area lodge. Participants must be 50 years of age or older. A valid driver’s license is required for registration. Each participant will be issued a bib with their identification number on it. The bib must be worn at all events or participation will not be permitted. Starting times and pairings will be determined and posted Sunday at 4:30 PM for the Speed Skating. A chili dinner will be served from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Monday. Award ceremonies for events of that day will take place in the Lodge at 4:00. A banquet for all participants is scheduled for Wednesday evening. Details will be posted at a later date. Lunch and dinner will be available at the Lodge on all other days of the events at the participant’s expense.

ICE SKATING:
Ice skating will be held at the Pinedale Ice Rink Monday morning, February, 11 at 8:30 AM. Participants may use their own skates or rent them at the rink. The laps will be around the hockey rink. The rink will be open and available for practice laps Sunday. Starting times and pairings will be determined Sunday evening, 4:30 PM after registration at the White Pine Ski Area lodge.

Speed Skating: Participants may register for only one of these two events.
1 Lap: About 200 yards
3 Laps: About 600 yards
Two participants from the same age group will compete at the same time. If there is no one left in an age group, then the next nearest competitor in age will be paired. The fastest time of two trials determines the winner. The age groupings will be 50 -54, 55 - 59, 60 - 64, 65 - 69, 70 -79, 80 and older. Medals will be awarded to the top three in each age group.

Hockey Goal Shoot: This event will be held at the Pinedale Ice Rink on Monday morning at 10:30 following the speed skating. Hockey sticks and pucks will be provided. Participants will be shooting from a distance of 50 ft into a hockey goal with a reduced opening. Each participant will be given 10 shots. One point is scored for each of the first 5 shots that hit within the goal. The next 5 attempts count in the order shot, if needed, as tie breakers. Medals will be awarded to the top 3 men and top 3 women regardless of age.

ALPINE EVENTS
Alpine and Nordic Events will be held at the White Pine Ski Area, 10 miles north of Pinedale. Check-in and race times will be determined Monday at 4:30 PM and posted at the Base Lodge after close of registration. Alpine skiers will be able to purchase a lift ticket at a discount by presenting their bib and registration form at the ticket booth on the day of the event. Volunteers will be issued a volunteer bib and will not be required to purchase a lift ticket for the day they volunteer.

Participants can sign up for only one of the two Slalom events. Competition in each event will be based on age and sex and run in the order of women first beginning with the oldest age group then men beginning with the oldest age group. There will be two runs for each event. The best time of the two runs is recorded. Medals will be awarded to the top three in each age group at 4:30 PM in the Base Lodge. Age groups will be 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-89, 90-90+

Giant Slalom: The course will be set on an intermediate to upper intermediate trail with approximately 27 gates over 4,900 feet with a vertical drop of about 850 feet. There will be one person on the course at a time.

Slalom (long course): This course will be set on an upper intermediate to expert trail with approximately 45 gates over 2,000 feet with a vertical drop of 700 feet. The long slalom is designed for intermediate to expert skiers.

Slalom (Short course): This course will be set on the beginning to lower intermediate trail with about 20 gates over 900 feet with a vertical drop of 220 feet. The short slalom is designed for less aggressive skiers.

NORDIC EVENTS
All Nordic events will be held at White Pine beginning at the West end of the parking lot. A limited amount of Nordic equipment is available for rent. Participants must provide their own snow shoes. Awards will be made at the end of each day’s events. Thursday award ceremony will include awards for the best combined times in the Giant slalom and the 2 ˝ K or 5K Cross-Country Ski Race (depending on age category).

Snow Shoe Race: This race will be about 1 K loop with staggered starts. The order will be with men beginning with the youngest age group then to women beginning with the youngest age group. Ski poles permitted. The event will start at the White Pine lodge at 11:00 AM on Monday.

Biathlon: The biathlon sponsors will provide pellets guns (you may bring your own). Participants will ski a ˝ K loop before reaching the shooting area. After the first loop, the participants will be given 3 shots to hit a target at 40 feet twice in the prone position. After a second loop, the participants will be given 3 shots to hit the target from the standing position without using ski poles. Participants will then ski a final lap to the finish line. Failure to hit the target twice will result in a 20 second penalty for each target missed. The event will start at the West end of the White Pine parking lot at 1:30 PM Tuesday.

Cross-Country Races; 1K, 2-1.2K, 5K. Entrants in the 1K cannot participate in the 2 ˝ and 5 K races. Skating is not permitted. The 2 ˝ K race qualifies for the combined Alpine-Nordic medals age 70 and over and the 5K race qualifies for the combined Alpine-Nordic medals for ages 50-69. The events begins at the West end of the White Pine parking lot on Thursday morning.

Snowball biathlon. The course will be the same as the regular biathlon. Each participant will be allowed to make and carry 10 snowballs with them. Five snowballs for each target. The first target will be the lid of a garbage can at 20 feet (15 feet for women). The second target will be an upright garbage can in which the snow-ball must enter the can like in basketball. This event will occur on Wednesday at 11:30 AM.

Alpine-Nordic Relay: The event combines down hill, cross-country, and snow shoeing. Teams may consist of one to three persons. The down hill leg begins at the top of the intermediate Wind River run to the cat track (about 2,000 ft.). The cross-country ski leg begins at the foot of Wind River to the Lodge (about 1K). The snow shoeing leg begins at the Lodge to the beginning of the Nordic trails (about 1K).

Skate ski race 2 ˝ K (ages 70 and over) and 5K: (ages 50 – 69). These events will be held Wednesday morning.

Mixed Cross-Country Relay, 5 K: Each team member is required to ski at least 1K. A team may consist of 2 or 4 members, with half being of the opposite sex. The event will occur on Thursday at 1:00 PM.

INTERGENERATIONAL EVENTS (Date and time yet to be decided depending on level of interest)
Giant Slalom: The course will be the same as described above. Each participant will be paired with their child or grandchild. Awards will be given for the best combined time in two classes: parent-child class and grandparent-grandchild class. There will be no age distinction.

2-1/2 K Cross-Country Relay: Relay teams will consist of either parent-child or grandparent-grandchild. Awards will be given for the best time in the two categories. There will be no age distinction.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Airports: Nearest airports are Jackson, WY, 80 miles to the north (1.75 hrs), Rock Springs, WY, 100 miles to the south (1.75 hrs), Salt Lake City, 220 miles to the southwest (4.0 hrs). Pinedale has a general aviation airport for private planes. Rental cars are available at all airports.

Lodging: Lodging at the White Pine Ski area is available. Each condominium unit includes a kitchen, living room with fireplace, two baths, two bedrooms and a loft. The lofts contain fourbunk beds. Cancellation Policy: There will be no refunds of registration fees with the exception that in the event that the games are cancelled for unforeseen circumstances, registration fees and accommodation deposits at White Pine will be refunded.
