Governor’s Arts Awards Recipients includes local artist Tucker Smith

(Cheyenne) - Gov. Dave Freudenthal and other state leaders will honor three individuals and a group from around the state for their extraordinary contributions to the arts in Wyoming on Feb. 22, 2008 in Cheyenne.
For more than two decades, the Governor’s Arts Awards have provided a forum to recognize those who dedicate their time, passion and financial support to Wyoming’s cultural life, as well as the importance of the arts in daily life. Those selected to receive awards this year will be honored at a dinner and awards ceremony in Cheyenne. Details are available from the Wyoming Arts Council at 307-777-7742.
“These people make invaluable contributions to the arts in Wyoming and I am delighted to be able to offer them the public recognition that they so deserve,” Freudenthal said. “Through this award ceremony we thank them for their work to paint and photograph Wyoming’s wildlife and scenic beauty, to bring art to our communities and to inspire young people to participate in arts and music programs.”
Recipients include: Neil Hansen, Associate Professor of Music, Northwest College, Powell: Hansen is a valuable member of the Northwest College faculty where he has passionately worked to enrich Wyoming’s musical community and inspire students to reach high expectations.
Lander Community Concerts Association, Lander: Since 1947, this organization has provided Lander and Fremont County with musical performances and music education programs for adults and young people, expanding the community’s awareness of the arts and music.
Michael McClure, photographer, Lander: McClure has dedicated his life to the advancement of the arts through his photography, his teaching and his promotion of the importance of art through workshops and speaking engagements. His extensive body of outstanding work has been celebrated regionally and recognized nationally.
Tucker Smith, artist, Pinedale: Smith has been called the most significant contemporary wildlife painter working today, and has achieved international stature for his work. Recognized by numerous national and international awards, Smith’s paintings capture the special qualities of Wyoming’s treasured wildlife and wild places.
“I'm always impressed with the number and quality of nominations for the Governor's Arts Awards,” said Milward Simpson, Director of the Department of State Parks and Cultural Resources. “The selection process is very challenging with many of the nominees worthy of the award. I look forward to honoring and celebrating the talents and artistic contributions this year's recipients have provided to Wyoming."
