The Rocky Mountain News has done a series of media presentations profiling the natural gas development boom taking place around Pinedale. In the Wednesday, December 12, 2007 online edition they have an article, two slide shows and two videos about Pinedale. The presentations include quotes and video take outs by local residents, environmental activists, ranchers, business people and gas field workers.

ARTICLE
Pinedale provides cautionary tale for Colorado communities By Gargi Chakrabarty, Rocky Mountain News (Wednesday, December 12, 2007)
The article includes, “National publications have presented Pinedale as a warning: Boomtown riches go hand in hand with bigtime troubles. In a profile of the town by The New Yorker magazine, local rancher Freddie Botur described a community in an energy boom as being no different than a person in the throes of addiction.”

SLIDE SHOWS
Slide show: Gas rush social problems felt

Slide show: Scenes from Pinedale, Wyo.

VIDEOS
Video: Coping with the boom in Pinedale, Wyo. (6:08 mins, Video journal by Sonia Doctorian) Six years ago, energy companies began drilling in the Jonah natural gas fields south of Pinedale, on the western edge of Wyoming. Since then, the population in surrounding Sublette County has risen by almost a fourth to 7,000 people, which doesn’t include 3,000 energy workers in the field. Longtime Pinedale residents try to cope with the boom.

Linda Baker, Coordinator, Upper Green River Valley Coalition
K.C. Lehr-Narcotics Task Force, Sublette County Sheriff’s Office
Van & Marilyn Huffman, Sublette County resident
Alvin Otter, Pipeline Inspector
Ed Hack, Welder

Video: Cowboys and economics in Wyoming Beyond the Boom, Part 3 (3:25 mins): Wyoming rancher Freddie Botur wants to slow the pace of natural gas drilling on public and private lands. He runs 3,000 cattle on approximately 80,000 acres of Wyoming public and private land. "The image of the cowboy in Wyoming is romantic, but it certainly doesn't tell the economic truth of Wyoming. Agriculture used to be the dominant business in Sublette County and now energy is the dominant industry," he said.
