Sublette County holds Republican Party caucuses

December 11, 2007

Sublette County held their Republican Party precinct caucuses on Tuesday, December 11th, at meeting places around the county. Because the county is so rural, town precincts combined to meet in Pinedale, Big Piney and Daniel.

Pinedale had 22 people at their caucus held at the Pinedale Library. The Marbleton, Big Piney and Marbleton North precincts were held at the Big Piney Library with seven people attending representing the three precincts. Daniel, which included Cora and Bondurant, had four people in attendance at the Daniel Community Center.

The Wyoming Republican Party moved up its caucus/convention events early this year, in hopes of attracting some of the candidates to come to Wyoming. And, indeed, several of them have come to Wyoming and have met with Republican in several Wyoming cities. But, as a result of moving the caucus/convention events up early, Wyoming risks losing half of its delegates to the Republican National Convention. GOP leaders in Wyoming say that it is worth it, since in the past, the selection of the GOP nominee for President was generally a "done deal" by the time Wyoming's turn came around to holds its caucus/convention events.

Unlike Iowa which selects its National GOP delegates at just one event, Wyoming uses two events in the selection process: Precinct Caucuses followed a few weeks later by County Conventions. The County Convention will be held in Pinedale on January 5th.

On March 8th the Sublette County Republican Party will hold a Lincoln Day event at Rendezvous Pointe in Pinedale to raise awareness of the party in the county. Senator Barrasso will be the keynote speaker.

The Democrats in Wyoming did not move their selection process up early, and they do not hold Precinct Caucuses, but use their County Conventions as their one and only event to select delegates to their national Convention. They will hold their convention in March, 2008.
