2 Daniel residents killed in wreck on US 191
Kenneth Finstad and Susan Leischer
February 5, 2008
Two Daniel residents were killed in a crash on US 191 on Monday, February 4th, when their vehicle went out of control on the icy road and collided with a tractor-trailer semi. The accident happened eight miles northwest of Farson in Sweetwater County at milepost 48.1 around 9:00 AM. The accident involved two vehicles and three people.
According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol report, road conditions at the time of the crash were icy with poor visibility due to snow and blowing snow. Kenneth Finstad, 65, was southbound on US 191 driving a 1997 Ford Explorer with Susan Leischer, 28, as his passenger. Finstad had just finished passing two other southbound vehicles at a speed too fast for the existing conditions, WHP reported. As Finstad passed by a northbound WYDOT snowplow he lost control of his vehicle and it went into a broadside slide going into the northbound lane of travel. His vehicle was struck in the northbound lane by a Kenworth tractor-trailer combination driven by Ryan Edvenson, age 31, of Rock Springs. Finstad’s Explorer caught on fire, but was quickly extinguished by bystanders. Finstad and Leischer both died at the scene. Finstad was wearing a seatbelt, Leischer was not. Edvenson was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured.
Follow-up inquiries may be directed to Sgt. Stephen Townsend, Wyoming Highway Patrol, 307-777-4306.
