U.S. Senator Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., is taking to the road next week to draw attention to the nation’s health care crisis and the steps Congress can take to wrangle health care costs in America.
From March 17 through March 20, Enzi will cover more than 1,100 miles, stopping in 10 Wyoming towns, to discuss his “10 Steps to Transform Health Care in America” bill.
“With 46.1 million Americans living without health insurance, we cannot continue to allow partisan politicking to stand in the way of real reform. We must begin a national debate to examine the whole health care system, and together we must put forward a bold and comprehensive solution that addresses our health care crisis now,” Enzi said. “That’s what my 10 Steps plan does, and that’s why I’ll be traveling all across the state next week – to put a strong local and national focus on the country’s health care problem and the need for the Senate to enact real reform."
The health care crisis is particularly acute in Wyoming where, on average, one in five Wyoming residents is uninsured and more and more residents are losing what coverage they do have, according to Enzi. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that 70 percent of Wyoming employers are small businesses, who find it nearly impossible to afford health care coverage for their employees, Enzi said.
Enzi’s schedule for the week is as follows (see map below):
MONDAY, MARCH 17 Cheyenne: 8 to 9 a.m. at the Cheyenne Depot (121 W. 15th St.) Rawlins: 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the Rawlins Depot (400 W. Front St.) Rock Springs: 4 to 5 p.m. at Western Wyoming Community College, Room #1302 (2500 College Dr.) Pinedale: 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Sublette County Library (155 S. Tyler)
TUESDAY, MARCH 18 Lander : 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at The Inn at Lander in the Pinnacle Room (260 Grand View Dr.) Worland: 4 to 5 p.m. at the Worland Community Center (1200 Culbertson Ave.) Lovell: 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Lovell Community Center (1925 Highway 310)
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 19 Casper: 1 to 2 p.m. at the Community Health Center of Central Wyoming auditorium (1522 E. A St.) Lusk: 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Niobrara County High School auditorium (702 W. 5th St.)
THURSDAY, MARCH 20 Gillette: 9 to 10 a.m. at City Hall in the Community Meeting Room (201 E. 5th St.)
At each of the 10 stops, Enzi will discuss the health care crisis in this country and his 10 Steps proposal to ensure that all Americans have access to affordable, quality health care. He will then open the meeting to questions specifically relating to the plan from the audience, and will be available to media at the conclusion of each stop. Enzi also plans to keep a blog of the trip that will be posted daily on his Web site, enzi.senate.gov. More details about the blog will be sent following the first stop in Cheyenne on Monday morning.
“I want to invite anyone who is concerned about the state of health care in Wyoming and the nation to come to one of my 10 Steps meetings. I’ll be breaking down my plan to overhaul health care in America, which includes ten things we can do right now to make health care more available and more affordable for just about everyone,” Enzi said. “Enacting any one of the steps would increase the number of people covered and bring down costs. I look forward to sharing my plan with Wyoming at the 10 Steps meetings next week.”
Enzi’s “10 Steps to Transform Health Care in America” bill, S. 1783, encompasses 10 comprehensive steps that Congress can take to reform health care, including market-based pooling and equalizing tax treatment of health insurance for all Americans.
