Cheyenne Student, Laramie Team Capture State MATHCOUNTS Competition at UW
April 28, 2008
Students from 14 schools in Wyoming participated in the 2008 Wyoming State MATHCOUNTS competition held at the University of Wyoming recently. 51 students from throughout the state competed. The top four individual winners earned the opportunity to represent Wyoming at the recent 2008 National MATHCOUNTS competition in Fort Worth, Texas.
Austin Byers, an eighth-grade student at Cheyenne's Johnson Junior High School, won first place and Laramie Junior High School won the team championship at the recent 2008 Wyoming State MATHCOUNTS competition held at the University of Wyoming.
Open to all sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students, MATHCOUNTS helps students understand how math is important to solve problems in everyday life, says Jerry Hamann, state MATHCOUNTS coordinator and a professor in the UW College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS).
