WYDOT I-80 update, April 1, 9:15AM:
WYDOT maintenance crews are using ice slicer chemicals and plows to eliminate difficult ice problems on Interstate 80 in the Elk Mountain area, which is the last obstacle remaining before I-80 can be reopened across southeast Wyoming.
District Maintenance Engineer Tim McGary said it still appears the highway can be reopened sometime this morning, but care must be taken to have the pavement in safe condition to avoid further crashes when delayed traffic is allowed back onto the highway.
Weather conditions have remained too cold to allow patching of the pavement section about two miles east of Walcott Junction damaged by a truck fire Monday. McGary said about a 60-foot section of the pavement in the westbound driving lane is riddled with shallow potholes one to two inches deep, so damaged road signs will be posted and traffic will be allowed to travel over it at a reduced speed.
If the traffic damages the pavement further, traffic there will be limited to the passing lane.
