The 2008 Wyoming Senior Olympics, open to serious competitors and just-for-fun participants alike 50 years old or older, will take place Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, July 24, 25, & 26th. Since the Senior Olympics are held for two years in each host city, this is Sheridan's second and last year until maybe 2025. The second year always sees a bigger turnout because it is a qualifying year for competitors to be eligible for the National Senior Olympics which will be held next in California in 2009.
State Coordinator Jim Eggenberger reports nearly 300 people have registered for the games so far, most of them from out of town and out of state.
"Last year, we had nearly 500 participants--a record," says Eggenberger, ever the optimist. "This year our committee is expecting upwards of 800, but I bet we hit 1000. I recommend people sign up soon," he said. "The first 500 entries will receive a free official gym bag and the first 700 will receive a free official T-shirt, and after July 5th, a $10 dollar late fee will be added on to the $5 registration fee."
More than 25 sports or games of skill will be held all around beautiful Sheridan, and one can enter as many events as one has time for, with a $5 charge for each event, and additional fees for certain sports, such as bowling and golf.
To accomodate all the out-of-town participants and their families, local motels, RV parks, and Sheridan College are making rooms available are limited special rates through July 5th.
