New District Court Judge position open in Pinedale
Accepting Expressions of Interest through July 18, 2008
June 22, 2008

Wyoming Supreme Court Chief Justice Barton R. Voigt, who acts as Chairman of the Judicial Nominating Commission, announced today that a new District Court Judge position in Pinedale has been approved by the Wyoming Legislature, acting through the Joint Appropriations Committee.

Chief Justice Voigt noted that the economic boom in Sublette County, combined with caseload pressures in Teton County and Fremont County, required creation of this new position in the Ninth Judicial District.

The Judicial Nominating Commission will accept expressions of interest from qualified persons to fill the new position through July 18, 2008. Copies of the expression of interest form can be obtained from the Clerk of Court at 307-777-7316, the Chief Justice at 307-777-7573, both at 2301 Capitol Avenue, Cheyenne, Wyoming 82002, or on the Supreme Court’s website, http://www.courts.state.wy.us. The completed form must be received in the office of the Chief Justice no later than 5:00 p.m. on July 18, 2008.

Rule 7 of the State of Wyoming Judicial Nominating Commission Rules provides as follows:

The commission should at all times take cognizance of the fact that the best qualified nominees may be those whom it would be most difficult to persuade to serve. Accordingly, the commission should not limit its consideration to persons who have been suggested by others or to persons who have indicated their willingness to serve. It shall be in order for the commission, if it sees fit to do so, to tender nomination to one (1) or more qualified persons, prior to, and subject to, the formal action by the commission in making nominations, in order to ascertain whether such a person will agree to serve if nominated.

Governor Freudenthal will appoint the Ninth Judicial District Court Judge from a list of three names submitted to him by the Judicial Nominating Commission. Serving on the Judicial Nominating Commission are Chief Justice Voigt; three lawyers elected by the Wyoming State Bar: Todd Hambrick of Casper, Rhonda Woodard of Cheyenne, and Michael Messenger of Thermopolis; and three non-lawyers appointed by the governor: Ronn Jeffrey of Cheyenne, Dave Gray of Rock Springs, and Kurt Dobbs of Yoder.

To serve as a district court judge, one must be learned in the law, at least twenty-eight years of age, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wyoming for the past two years.

For more information contact Chief Justice Barton R. Voigt at 307-777-7573.
