Boy Scouts assist Forest with New Fork Lakes Fire
by Bridger-Teton National Forest
July 30, 2008

Some of the 1000 Arrowmen from the Boy Scouts of America that are presently working on the Bridger-Teton National Forest have stepped in to aid the Forest with the New Forks Fire which is burningnorth of the town of Pinedale, Wyoming. Several volunteer Arrowmen are assisting the Forest by working in the Fire Cache, which is the warehouse of fire supplies and materials that are disseminated whenever a large fire breaks out on the Forest.

"It is a great help to have the extra hands," said Fire Cache Manager Heidi Zardus. "They are helping me get the orders filled and the supplies shipped out in record time," she commented. The Arrowmen are working on the Bridger-Teton until August 1 completing service projects around the Forest. The Arrowmen are constructing or reconstructing several miles of trail on Teton Pass as well as improving habitat and removing fence near the Gros Ventre Wilderness area.

Additionally, these 1000 volunteers have also sent manpower to assist the Forest with fuels reduction work off of Fall Creek Road. Forest crews have been working in the area to reduce hazardous fuels that have built up in the area south of Jackson, Wyoming.

Specially trained sawyers from the Forest cut the fuels and the Scouts moved in to amass the wood into large burn piles. "It is a labor-intensive effort that is helping the Forest’s fire program achieve its goals for the area," said Forest Supervisor Kniffy Hamilton. "The true benefit to the Forest from the people and hours supplied by the Scouts is immeasurable and we will be benefiting from their service for years to come," she said.
