Hunter Education Classes offered starting Sept. 2 in Pinedale
Required for all Wyoming hunters born after 1965
August 22, 2008
Wyoming Game & Fish Department is offering a hunter education class in Pinedale beginning Tuesday, September 2 through Sublette BOCES. The course is required for anyone born after 1965. Class spaces are limited, so hunters are urged to call right away to register. Students must complete all six days of the class, pass a written test and demonstrate safe firearms handling procedures before receiving hunter safety certification.
This course is not designed to be difficult, but it does reinforce the principles of safe firearms handling and hunter ethics, in addition to covering the basics of survival and first aid. The major purpose of hunter education is the prevention of hunting and firearm related accidents, but emphasis is also placed on improving knowledge about the heritage of hunting and developing a sense of ethics and responsibility.
"Our late summer/early fall classes fill up quickly with people trying to satisfy their hunter education requirements prior to opening day," says Jim Dawson, hunter education coordinator for the Game and Fish. "Hunter education is taught by volunteer instructors who, just like their students, want to put down the books and pick up a firearm in the fall to go hunting. Although there are still some seats available right now, the best time to take a hunter education class is really January through August."
Pinedale classes will be held on September 2, 3, 4, 9 and 11, 2008 from 5:40 PM to 8:30 PM. Cost is $5.00. To register, call Sublette BOCES at 307-367-6873 or register online at www.subletteboces.com.
