August 26, 2008
National Public Lands Day (NPLD) will be celebrated locally at the CCC Ponds Recreation Area near Fremont Lake north of Pinedale, Wyo., on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 8:00 a.m-noon.
NPLD sponsors are asking for volunteers of all ages to help clear brush along trails, repair signs and benches, monitor bluebird nest boxes and bat roost boxes, and install a new interpretive panel at the information kiosk. Volunteers are encouraged to sign up early.
Lunch will be offered to all volunteers in addition to T-shirts and other items. The event is being organized and supported by the City of Pinedale, Sublette County, Sublette County Conservation District, Wyoming Game and Fish, Sublette County School District, Sublette County Recreation Board,U.S. Forest Service (USFS), the Natural Resource Conservation Service, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and others. Potential sponsors and businesses are encouraged to share this information with their employees.
This year, NPLD will celebrate the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) by planting over one million trees. From 1933 to 1942, millions of young American men were hired by the CCC to develop public parks, fight fires and build fish hatcheries, fire lookouts, hiking trails and other features on public lands. Many Americans still benefit from the efforts of the CCC.
The CCC Ponds Recreation Area is locally appreciated for opportunities to fish, hike and observe wildlife in a beautiful setting. The ponds were named for the 1930s CCC camp that operated on the shores of Fremont Lake and Pine Creek.
The modern CCC Ponds were developed on BLM and USFS lands with the cooperative efforts of numerous public and private entities. The ponds are located just south of the Fremont Lake Road about five miles north of Pinedale.
If you would like to volunteer, need more information or contribute to NPLD in some other way, please contact BLM Recreation Specialist Martin Hudson at 307-367-5300, or email martin_hudson@blm.gov.
