PFAC season kicks off with Juno award winning guitarist
by Pinedale Fine Arts Council
September 9, 2008
The Pinedale Fine Arts Council is proud to present 3-time Juno Award winning guitarist Alpha Yaya Diallo performing live at the Pinedale Auditorium Wednesday Sept. 17, 2008 beginning at 7:30 pm.
Diallo will be joined by his backing band, The Bafing Riders, a seven-piece Afro-funk band featuring guitar, bass, drums, djembe, balafon and two female dancers.
Hailing from Guinea, West Africa, Diallo is one of the hottest acts on the current world music scene. Now based in Vancouver, Canada, he's earned a matchless reputation internationally for the excellence of his musicianship and the excitement of his live shows - whether performing solo or with his band The Bafing Riders. Diallo is a uniquely multi-talented artist. His dexterous acoustic and electric guitar-playing, with its fluid melodic lines and compelling grooves, places him in the front ranks of African axemen. In addition he is a skilled and experienced performer on a variety of percussion instruments, and on the balafon (traditional wooden xylophone).
Diallo has recorded five highly-acclaimed albums of his own compositions. Both the acoustic "Nene" and the electric "Futurwere" were nominated for JUNO Awards (the highest accolade of the Canadian music industry). His album "The Message" won the coveted JUNO in 1999 for Best Global Recording. In 2002, his album "The Journey" also won the JUNO Award for Best Global Recording, as well as The Best World Independent album.
In recent years Diallo has criss-crossed Canada and the United States, garnering rave reviews wherever he goes for his masterful performances. He's been invited to an ever-increasing number of world music, jazz, folk, and other festivals -- sharing the stage with the likes of David Lindley, Thomas Mapfumo and reggae stars Jimmy Cliff, Third World and Burning Spear.
PFAC is excited to have Diallo kicking off the 2008-2009 season which will also feature Chinese acrobats, a Flamenco dance troupe, a tenor trio and the nationally renowned Dallas Brass.
Tickets for the performance are $13 adults & $7 students ($1 more at the door) and are available at Rock Rabbit, The Cowboy Shop, Pony Express Photo, Office Outlets, The Big Piney Library and at the door the evening of the performance.
PFAC will also be selling raffle tickets as part of a fall raffle. Lucky winner will receive a piece of custom pottery by Wyoming artist, Steve Schrepferman.
