by Wyoming Game & Fish
November 10, 2008
The public and media are invited to attend the Yellowstone Grizzly Coordinating Committee (YGCC) and the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee (IGBC) fall meetings in West Yellowstone Nov. 12-14.
The meeting will be held at the Holiday Inn Sun Spree Resort. A meeting agenda can be found at: http://www.igbconline.org.
Agenda items of the YGCC meeting include a summary of annual incident reports from state wildlife agencies in Wyoming, Idaho, Montana and Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. Other items to be discussed include a presentation on a grizzly bear genetic study, trapping protocols and updates on current lawsuits regarding delisting.
The IGBC will be hosting a whitebark pine workshop that focuses on the current status and future management of whitebark pine within the Greater Yellowstone Area. Noted experts on whitebark pine trees will be in attendance. Whitebark pine nuts are an important food source of grizzly bears. On Nov. 13, the IGBC meeting will include a year-end report from the five grizzly bear ecosystems and updates on public information and education efforts.
The IGBC was formed in 1983 to help ensure recovery of viable grizzly bear populations and their habitat in the lower 48 states through interagency coordination of policy, planning management and research. The IGBC consists of representatives from the U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Geological Survey and representatives of state wildlife agencies in Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and Washington. In the interest of international cooperation and coordination, the Canadian Wildlife Service is also represented.
The YGCC consists of federal, state, county and tribal organizations located within the Greater Yellowstone Area. The YGCC coordinates management and promotes the exchange of information about the Yellowstone Grizzly population.
