The past several years have spoiled us. The mild winters and springs lulled us into expecting a late April, early May fly fishing season here in the high country. Well we had a more traditional winter and spring in our parts, which has changed our fly fishing dynamic this season. We have had a lot of surface moisture the past few weeks and in some cases our snow pack was replenished in the high country. What we hope for is a moderate melt condition with alternating warm and cool temperatures, which will allow for a gradual release of flows into the major streams. The water temperatures remain low and the fish are a little sluggish which keeps them in their winter conservation of energy mode.

We are getting some action on the New Fork by offering the trout large mouthfuls of Double Bunnies, various colors of woolly buggers and other large streamer patterns. If the big fish are going to expend some energy they want a good meal. The trout will also work over smaller nymph patterns if those patterns are floated deep and run by their noses.

We have had a couple of afternoons of BWO hatches when the temperature moved up a little and the cloud cover was right. This brought some trout to the surface on our small spring creek which gave our anglers a sample of what will soon materialize. The water conditions and increased spring surface moisture should set us up for a good bug crop in a couple of weeks. The trout should be hungry after a long winters repose and ready to go after these good bug hatches.
