The Wyoming Game and Fish Department reports that the Jackson moose herd appears to be continuing its downward trend with fewer total animals being observed during this winter’s aerial surveys. Also, there were fewer calves counted, which doesn’t bode well for the future of this herd. "Basically, all the information we have paints a pretty bleak picture for the Jackson moose herd," said Brimeyer. "We will continue to scale back on hunting permits because that’s our primary tool to directly affect big game populations."
WG&F has continually reduced the number of hunting licenses for the Jackson moose herd over the past several years. "When moose numbers were strong back in the early 1990s, there were nearly 500 licenses being offered in the Jackson moose herd," said Brimeyer. "This year we are down to offering just 40 licenses."
To learn more about the proposed 2009 big game hunting seasons, plan to attend one of the upcoming WG&F season setting meetings scheduled in the region: March 31, 7-9 p.m., Jackson, Antler Motel April 1, 7-9 p.m., Pinedale, WG&F office
